Halloween Gorgefest 2010

I will only say this once, until next year of course, my kids are at the BEST ages for trick or treating!
In case you don't recognize them, we have Phoebe as a ballerina, Jabe as Lighting McQueen and Tobin as, as, umm, something from Star Wars that he was really jazzed about but I haven't the foggiest idea what it is. A Jedi snowboarder perhaps?

Phoebe choose to be a ballerina months ago and I was stoked because that meant we didn't have to spend a dime . . . we have tutus. Then two days ago she told me she changed her mind. She wanted to be Belle from Beauty and the Beast. "Sorry." I told her, "We don't have a Belle costume, maybe next year" . . . . tears . . . hers, not mine . . . "Phoebe how about you could be a ballerina NAMED Belle!" She was instantly happy. Win- Win.

Did a little treating in our old neighborhood and then our new(er) one.

My niece, Mariko
Then the candy dump . . .

I have been so fretting over the candy this year. It is my personal crack and I just can't have it in the house or I will eat it. The kids take after me and will obsess about the fun sized wonders constantly but . . . how do I let them enjoy the holiday without sending them to the therapist's couch, groaning about how their mother, the control freak, made them toss out their hard earned candy loot? Money. That's how.

I always threaten that the kids will get belly aches if they eat too much but it's a threat they've never felt. Until last night. When we got home at 8 last night I told them that they could eat as much as they wanted for an hour. And then they gobbled. And they told me I was the best mom ever. And they begged for water. And they stopped only for me to help with the difficult wrappers or to have a sugar rage. Then they would gobble more. At nine they were all feeling green. I suggested they may have had too much candy and they agreed. Then I told them that if they wanted to we could throw it away and I would give them each five bucks to spend how they wanted. And they did it! They threw out pounds and pounds of candy. Success.

Come back again, I'm here all month.

Dude you are the best mom ever.

November is off with a bang!

Meanwhile we are rationing our pounds of candy 100 calories at a time... (every couple of minutes)

I don't ever remember having this candy problem I keep hearing about today....but maybe living in a place where the houses are all a quarter-mile apart from each other had something to do with it! :-)

that is awesome! I have them pick out the ones they don't like, these we throw away, then I put it out of sight and they get to pick a bit out for a few days while I slowly throw away duplicates etc. and they actually forget about it over time. I love your idea!

I seem to remember another situation in which you paid your kids TO eat, not to throw the food away...

I agree, my kids are the same age and trick-or-treating was a BLAST! I'm glad you guys had so much fun. Halloween can be such a great family time :)

I forgot to tell you about the Sugar Sprites. They are little fairies that live on sugar. As winter approaches the pickings become slim as there are no fruits on the trees. We help them out by leaving all the non-chocolate candy out for them. They reward the kids by leaving one of their colorful feathers for them. It works every time. (The feathers can be purchased at Michael's or Craft Warehouse. Now you know.

Phoebe was so cute when she was talking to Isabela.
