Fashion Lessons From My Kids

I was so excited to go school shopping for Tobin for the first time. Until I came home with shopping bags worth of great deals of stylish clothes that Tobin refuses to wear. Pretty much anything with a collar is unacceptable. And God forbid he wear any shoe that doesn't light up enough to land a plane. It's madding as he turns his nose up at a great striped rugby shirt for ummm lets say a black wolf tee all in the name of "coolness". So my six year old has taken away one of my largest parenting joys of having well dressed kids. But I have come to realize that as he is starting his new school career it should be about his confidence and not about me exerting my taste on him. Thank goodness I still have these three year olds you will wear anything I button on them.

When Jabe walked in to his Sunday school class teacher Kim asked him what was on his tie. Jabe gave the best man-fashion answer for his polka dots, "balls." he says.

I've been laying hands on Phoebe and Jabe that one of them will say no to cartoon t-shirts and plastic light up shoes in the future. But not holding my breath.

You have just articulated my greatest fears. Let me know if you have any tips if you find success with your pair.

I'd place my money on Phoebe for the fashionista in the family - I'm going to bet that she'll hang in there with you. :-)

I love these pics of Phoebe. Her hair is sure growing fast now!

Daphne is still hangin' in with me most of the time, but would rather wear "dress up" wear to school - Christmas dresses etc and tries funny things with her hair.

It's Maisie that won't wear hardly any of her new cute clothes and her hand me downs either - and no frills in her hair. She wouldn't even wear tights and ballet shoes to her first ballet class. Oh my..

Yes, I will be dressing Ruby to a tee this year...

Yeah, I thought I was a parent genius by offering my son the option of choosing a shirt and then mommy gets to choose his bottoms. However every stinkin' time he starts chanting "beese-ball" and shuffles through until he finds a shirt with a ball on it. Boys. Thank goodness we each have a daughter. There is hope.

Becca, I made the biggest mistake a few weeks go. I sent Jeff and Max to Target together. Jeff knew that Max was in need of new shoes so they picked up a pair of black Spiderman little runners that Max adored. I just couldn't do it...they were way too, um, not my style. I returned them without Max knowing and so far he hasn't remembered that shopping trip with Daddy. I will give in some day, just not yet.

cartoon t-shirts and light-up shoes ... oh how I really don't like those!

Your kids are beautiful ... and I LOVE the clothes :)

I think little kids should get to be little kids and wear light-up shoes if they want to. They'll change their minds soon enough, and you'll be wishing they were little kids again :-) Bring on the joy in their little faces!

Thank goodness Jenna still let's me pick out her clothes. Her only rule is that she does not like to wear Polo style "boy" shirts. She is really easy going about it all. I do know someday that will change, but for now I am lucky!

Brandon is sooo with Tobin about the no-collar issue. I have tried several kinds.

He will wear a button up dress shirt for the right occasion, but very few of those occasions exist.

He will not wear plaid except in shorts. He will wear white tshirts that are stained or stretched out in odd shapes. Any & all attempts to change his mind are met with a brick wall. His latest favorite store is American Eagle Outfitters. Old Navy is a vaguely acceptable second store. I just hide the bags & receipts and he doesn't seem to know the difference. Such a teenager...
